The Cruiser

Fleet art thou on the waters, cruiser dread,
Fleet as the quick black waves that by thee roll
When from the conning-tower and fore control
Leap the light waves of will electric, sped
To turn thee vibrant steel from slumb'ring lead,
And waken speed and anger in thy soul,
Till all thy engines hurl thee to thy goal
And all thy guns roar vengeance for thy dead.

And here are England's noblest: staunch and gay
They hold by Nelson's spirit, and the free
Bright soul of Rupert, and the steadfast star
That shone in Blake; and tell with eyes of glee
Of foemen sought through waters near and far,
And the high joy of battle, and the Day.
