The Liner

North on his voyage of wonder Hanno swept
Sheer through the Pillars to the unhanselled main,
High beat his passionate heart the End to gain,
And South and South remorselessly he crept,
And with the dying year his mast unstept,
And in strange harbourage sowed and reaped his grain,
And with the dawning spring held on again
Till the red sun upon his right upleapt.

Here, where he dared the vast of days and seas,
The liner sweeps, royal in power and grace,
Linking the loves of every breed and clime:
Whose maker, Man, hath caged the wanton breeze,
And told the stars, and fettered felon Space,
And tamed the indomitable heart of Time.
