Peace The Preserver

But there where calm and strength and joy have sway,
And Mammon's strangling hands are loosed from life,
And want is freed from hunger's whetted knife,
And men meet death with laughter free and gay,
And all are warriors in their country's fray,
And valour best is loved by maid and wife,
And all is fit and strong for instant strife,
There dwells the peace that is a nation's stay.

She for the dreamer hath nor love nor ruth,
She dwells not in the fane where cowards kneel
And pray that God's great test of trial may cease,
But deep within the awful eyes of Truth,
And laughing in the glint and strength of steel,
And in the hearts of heroes, there lies Peace.
