Blake

Beneath the Hoe that heroes love to tread,
Silent, the great fleet swept along the Sound,
Yet had her men no joy of English ground,
For ere thy West might take thee, thou, wast dead.
Nor could the fame that valiant Tromp had fled,
Nor Spain's might shattered, and her navies drowned,
Nor England's name through all the seas renowned
Assuage the sorrow for so dear a head.

Scholar and warrior, great by sea and land!
Gallant at Taunton showed thy tameless will
O'er all the seas through dread of thee alone
Earth's navies vailed to England at command,
And stern from Malaga we hear thee still-
"No law shall judge the English save their own."
