Cromwell

That England should be great, this was the star
Of all the hope thy kingly heart could feel,
Whether thy stern God-fearing men in steel
Drove the Scotch host like mist from high Dunbar,
Or thy great word went forth, and staid the war
That crushed God's Vaudois 'neath the victor's heel,
Or spake thy will to Spain, to guard the weal
Of English lands and lives in seas afar.

O'er all the seas thou gav'st Her pride and sway,
Through thee the nations met Her eyes, and feared:
Yet 'twas thy faith that not by fear nor force
Might England live, were not Her children reared
In the fair life that wells from freedom's source,
In the great law that all God's sons obey.
