The Dream of Immortality

Better to sleep and dream a troubled dream
Than to lie silent in such torpid plight
Of soul and body through the short-lived night,
Though dusk be not the dawn it oft would seem.

Ay, better far by some distorted gleam
To catch at wild perceptions of the light
Than to sink back beyond all power of sight
And rest in nothing, stagnant mid the stream.

They mock us for the folly of our trust,
For visions dim as mountains all untrod,
For nightmares bred of arrogance and lust;

They say this soul that fills me is a clod
Already crumbling to its native dust:
Ah, let me dream - I dreamed it was a god!
