Tantalus

Far down in Hell’s abysmal depth he lay,
Eternal waves of thought seethed through his brain
In molden eddies: Memory’s clutch of pain
Reft his torn life from her dear lord, Decay:

When Love, to crown her champion’s earthly fray,
Laid him his Lady in his arms again,
Who with pure lips on lips of leprous stain
Clave to his soul in beauteous vain essay.

She passed: and fiercer for the balking bliss
Resurgent torture swathed his fettered frame:
Yet laughter shrilled a challenge from his soul

And mocked the fiends that mocked his questing kiss, -
For lo! eternal and unscarred of flame
Shone the bright vision, clear on memorys scroll.
